The Challenges of Online Education

Enrollment in online education is at an all time high, according to a recent study by the Sloan Consortium. Based on responses from more than 2,200 colleges and universities across the U.S., the study reveals that 3.2 million students took at least one online course in the fall of 2005, an increase of 850,000 more than the year before.

With the rise in popularity of e-learning comes some unique challenges not extant with more traditional classrooms. Students need to be aware of the differences between online and traditional classes and be prepared to make the necessary adjustments. Significant challenges faced by online students include the following:

Technical problems. Computer hardware and peripheral devices such as printers, modems and routers are not indestructible; as with any other man-made device, they can break down or malfunction at the most inopportune time. In addition to equipment failure, an older computer may be incompatible with some software required for the course. Viruses, trojans, spyware and other malware could infect a computer, causing it to run poorly or not at all. A slow internet connection might cause problems logging into class, retrieving and submitting assignments, and posting to threaded discussions. Any of these problems could cause a great deal of frustration for the student trying to complete course assignments. Therefore, it is important for the student to have access to a backup computer to use in case of equipment malfunction.
Staying motivated. Going to school always requires a certain level of motivation from a student regardless of whether it’s a “bricks-and-mortar” institution or online class. In a traditional classroom setting, a student has live, face-to-face interaction with the instructor and fellow students — a camaraderie that may help boost enthusiasm and motivation for the course. In an internet-based class however, there is no live contact with instructor and classmates — the student works alone in a virtual environment. This lack of live contact may lead to a feeling of isolation, and make it difficult for a student without a high internal commitment or personal drive to stay motivated during the course.
Self-discipline. As with motivation, a student needs good self-discipline to succeed online. The freedom and flexibility of e-learning is what’s so attractive to many people. There’s no obligation to login to class at any particular time or place — you can go to class and do your assignments whenever it’s convenient for you. However, this same freedom can lead to procrastination, and cause the unwary or undisciplined student to fall behind in his assignments. Once behind, it can be difficult to catch up.
It’s difficult to improve oral communication skills. There are many classes such as speech, drama, debate, teacher education and so forth that require the student to make oral presentations in front of a group of people. With online courses this is not practical, as the classroom is virtual, and the students are not all gathered together at one time in one room. A student wishing to improve oral communication skills may need to take these classes in a traditional classroom course.
Classes with lab or hands-on requirements may not be available online. If a lab course cannot be simulated or practically offered online, a student will need to take the course at a local college campus or other location with the necessary facilities for completing the course work.
Students considering taking online courses need to be aware of these and other challenges, and be prepared to meet them in order to be successful online. If any challenge seems insurmountable, the student should reconsider the online option and perhaps take a traditional ground-based course instead.

As the number of enrollees increases and educational inputs become more demanding each year, an educational organization must find ways to make its goals and strategies work. Measuring, as most experts say, is one of the top ways to know whether an institution trails on the right track. The balanced scorecard for education evaluation is the fitting method to evaluate how far and how effective the school has gone in terms of educational inputs.

This balanced scorecard is actually a strategy management system. Colleges and universities across the continental US and around the world use this tactic to improve an already established institution-wide planning process. Just like most scorecard systems, the education evaluation scorecard system interprets the goals and strategies of the institution into a comprehensible and measurable set of indicators. Most of these indicators, nonetheless, have direct link to the strategies and goals. The internal process of an education evaluation balanced scorecard involves the process of inputting, managing, processing, and analyzing data. The right term for a collective amount of raw data is benchmarking. It is the result of the collaboration in research, negotiation, and analysis of each college department or administrative section. Each section in the organization should have its own set of goals, especially those who are involved in the academic side. In order to meet these goals, the benchmarks will serve as keys to adjusting and assessing strategies.

For a manager to be effective in creating partial and practical benchmarks for evaluating educational performance of the institution, he or she must give focus on every area of the organization.

For instance, in the external stakeholder perspective, the benchmarks that the manager can most likely use are student access and success, outreach, marketing, and connections to the academic communities. In the internal stakeholder perspective, the manager may include effective communication, secure and safe campuses, and integrated planning and performance measurement.

Under the financial and business perspective, the possible benchmarks are as follows: updates on facilities, appropriate replacement of school equipment, updating of the school facility, and practical and comprehensive resource planning strategy. For growth and innovation perspective, the manager may cover coordinated and unified programs for teaching staff development, and innovation in delivering education modules, services, and programs.

Schools can use other possible benchmarks in their balanced scorecard for education evaluation. The idea is to cover every important area of the institution and to come up with indicators that are timely, balanced, measurable, and practical.

Wisconsin’s Mandatory Alcohol Education

The state of Wisconsin generally treats a first-time OWI (Operating While Intoxicated) conviction as a civil, rather than a criminal offense. This means that the penalty for a first time offense will not include jail time, unlike in some other states. The legal must be no less than $150, which is also mild compared to the laws in some other places.

This does not mean that Wisconsin is lenient on driving under the influence of alcohol, however. The penalties for OWI become increasingly harsh as the number of convictions increases. Strict punishment is not the only, nor necessarily the best, way to address recidivism, however. Like many other states, Wisconsin offers drug and alcohol education in an attempt to discourage OWIs and other dangerous crimes through persuasion, rather than threats.

Any person who has been convicted of OWI, even if it is a first time offense, will be required to undergo an alcohol abuse assessment to be administered by a state or private agency at the expense of the convicted. Even if they are determined to have a drinking problem, they are not legally required to seek treatment of any kind. However, everyone who is convicted of OWI, regardless of their assessment results or number of prior convictions, is required to complete an alcohol education class.

A convicted person’s assessment results will not determine whether they have to take a class, but they have some effect on the time of class the person is required to take. The Wisconsin judicial system tries to match people with the type of class that will be most helpful for them, depending on factors such as their reliance on alcohol or their rate of recidivism. These classes are often hosting in public areas such as community centers and clinics, but they can also be held by private groups. Anyone who wishes to lead an alcohol education course is required to earn certification from the state.

All of these classes have the goal of reducing the rate of OWI offenses. They may discuss the risks of alcohol and drug abuse, identify and address reasons that people abuse alcohol, stress the importance of road safety, work on building students’ self esteem in order to improve behavior, or cover other related topics. Some studies suggest that these classes can be useful in convincing people to change problematic behavior, although some people remain skeptical.

I think this a good set-up for someone new to sound systems and if you live in a small apartment or something like that. The sound quality is good enough for me, I’m not that picky though. This is my first sound system and so far I have not had any problems with it. The set up was extremely easy. One problem was the wires for the surround speakers were not nearly long enough. Also the sub woofer really pounds, it shook my whole apartment and I didn’t even have it all the way up.
I’ve had this system for about 3 weeks now, and have been completely satisfied. Obviously, with an entry level receiver and speaker package, you aren’t going to get the bells and whistles of higher-end models, but this Onkyo system has all I need to enjoy a good movie in my medium sized apartment. For the price, the quality and features are outstanding. Set-up was easy, though I have had a little experience setting up sound systems before. I did read the manual, which has good explanations of features and connection tips and guidelines. One suggestion I have is to make sure you use proper speaker wire gauge. The speaker wires that come with the package looked like 24 gauge, which, in my opinion, is far too thin a gauge for any speaker. I went to Home Depot and bought some good 14 gauge speaker wire (about for 100 ft) for the back 2 speakers and sub, which have a longer wire run, and 16 gauge speaker wire (about for 100 ft) for the front 3 speakers.
